A Account of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor
During the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to arrange a place to stay after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was in town and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of just sleep at the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, is not open around the clock. With no idea quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a bus into town and began walking near the casino, believing I might spend the night in a place operating all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for acing the admissions interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.
Our society requires more people like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared out of place since a woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and asked if everything was alright. I explained my situation and right away she said I could crash on the ground at her university residence at the local university – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: one sandwiches she had from her work shift. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location and secure to spend the night.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a young woman inviting a male stranger she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious about things like that. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she offered that help – yet incredibly thankful.
I never did study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of generosity. I hope life has rewarded her generosity tenfold. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
