Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the late director Rob Reiner, who was her director in the iconic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.

A Tragic Discovery

Reiner was located lifeless with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home this past weekend.

“Oh how we will miss this man…” the actress posted on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “Our gratitude, Rob and Michele, for your faith in true love, stories, and joy. We appreciate your faith in human goodness and your deep patriotism.”

Legal Proceedings Unfold

Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being detained without the option of bail. It’s been reported that Reiner’s daughter Romy found her father’s body.

“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan added. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”

Children Share Their Grief

Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “The tragic, shattering loss of our parents is an experience no one should have to face. They were more than parents; they were our closest confidants.”

Hollywood Tributes Pour In

Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, also paid tribute to Reiner through a message shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.

“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the tribute noted. “He cherished performers and improved scribes. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”

A Lasting Cinematic Legacy

When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

Rob Reiner was introduced to Michele Singer Reiner while making When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a fellow filmmaker and pal.

Reiner’s celebrated filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
