A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
