One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company Unilever blocked the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will personally create the controversial flavor within an individual series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Between Creators versus Parent Company

The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has become an emblem of support for Palestinians due to its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.

This upcoming product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that was first created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to create other ice cream flavors focusing on issues that the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years of involvement, citing worries that its independence had been compromised after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
