Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
