Weather experts are reporting an icy start to the new year, with snow expected over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are planned to take place, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are expected to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Activated

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this signified the weather could to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
