The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
