The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 lives perished and over 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
