Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
