The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
