The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
