The people of Israel mark second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations proceed
Citizens have assembled around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to close the disparities between the two sides.
Critical Points in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- Post-war management of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location appears as home now and until each abducted person return no one will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can commence heal," she added.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the war to finish in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and zone areas and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"When the night comes, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my little child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the south region of that area reported two more victims had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the southern area, medical staff reported.
