Trump Invites Families of Attacked Military Soldiers to the White House
Former President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that he has extended an invitation the relatives of a Guard member fatally shot last week to visit the presidential home.
He noted that he spoke to her parents and they were “heartbroken”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Incident
Specialist Beckstrom, twenty years old, was fatally shot in a violent incident on last Wednesday in the nation's capital.
Her colleague, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, is still in the hospital in critical condition.
Gatherings across West Virginia have been held in their remembrance.
Presidential Invitation
The president explained he’s proposed a White House visit for the loved ones of both members of the state National Guard.
“I told them: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a difficult moment, visit the White House. We’re going to recognize Sarah,” the president addressed the press. “And in the same way with Andrew, recover or not.”
Community Response
Community members gathered over the weekend at Webster County high school in the state to honor Sarah.
Both the soldiers had been serving with the state guard as part of the president’s federal initiative to assist public safety in Washington DC.
Remembering the Soldier
“She was the kind of student that educators hoped for. She carried herself with quiet strength, a bright grin and a positive energy that lifted those around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the head of her alma mater, told the Associated Press. “She was kind, compassionate and always eager to help others.”
Memorial plans for Beckstrom are in the process of planning.
Legal Actions and Policy Adjustments
Officials have indicted a twenty-nine-year-old Afghan national with a charge of homicide and two counts of violent assault while carrying a weapon.
The tragedy prompted the government to suspend asylum processing and halt issuing entry permits to owners of Afghan passports.
Status of Andrew Wolfe
The airman, a native of the city, enlisted in early 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman high school, per the AP.
He is still undergoing care and is “fighting for his life”, the state’s governor Morrisey said on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
Attorney general Pam Bondi informed the program that she aimed to meet with the family.
Legacy of Sarah Beckstrom
Beckstrom, from her hometown, completed her education from Webster County high school in June 2023 and enlisted soon after, working as a MP with honor, per the military.
“She had a lot of compassion and she definitely had courage,” Morrisey told the audience at the vigil. “Though her life ended too soon, she has made an impact that’s going to last forever.”
