Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Trust' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
