Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
